how a project runs

From the first conversation to the day you move in: the stages of an architecture or interior project with us, what happens in each, and how long it usually takes.

Every project is different, but the shape is usually the same. Here’s what to expect, stage by stage.

1. a first conversation

We meet, at the studio, at your home or on a call, and talk about how you live or work, what’s not working now, what you love, your timeline and your budget. If we’re a good fit, we send a proposal setting out scope, fees and stages.

2. site survey and brief

We measure and photograph the space and check its condition: structure, plumbing, wiring, waterproofing, and any building or society rules. This is where problems are cheapest to find. For older flats, read what to check before renovating.

3. concept design

Layout options, then a direction: the plan, the mood, the key materials and the big moves. You see drawings, references and material samples, not just pictures.

Typically 3–5 weeks.

4. design development

We refine the chosen layout and develop the joinery, lighting, ceilings, flooring and bathrooms. We assemble a physical material palette for you to see and touch. Furniture is designed or selected.

Typically 3–6 weeks.

5. detailed drawings and budget

Working drawings for every trade: civil, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, stone, metal, false ceiling and painting. These drawings make the costing accurate and the site predictable. We help you invite and compare quotes, and lock the budget before work starts.

6. approvals

Society NOCs and permissions, and, for architecture projects, statutory approvals. We prepare the drawings and paperwork and tell you early what’s likely to be needed.

7. site work

Contractors and craftspeople build the project to our drawings. We visit regularly and check quality and progress against the drawings. We resolve questions on site, approve samples and mock-ups, and keep you updated. For projects outside Mumbai, see designing a home in another city.

An apartment interior typically takes 3–6 months on site. A full renovation of an older flat takes 4–9 months. A new house takes longer, depending on size and site.

8. finishing, styling and handover

Snag lists closed, furniture and lighting installed, art and objects placed, and a final walkthrough. We hand over care notes for the natural materials. Lime plaster, raw brass and timber each age in their own way, and we tell you what to expect.

after you move in

We stay in touch. If something needs adjusting in the first months, we come back.
